How it Works

At its core, Musica Universi is an exploration of live planetary and cosmic sonification. It is a generative, real-time ambient music engine that translates the current, ever-shifting state of the Earth and sky into a continuous, 7-layer atmospheric orchestra.

Rather than relying on static, pre-recorded loops or predictable compositions, our system listens to live scientific telemetry, algorithmically mapping raw data into an immersive, living acoustic environment designed for deep focus, meditation, and existential wonder.

The Seven Sonic Layers

Every element of the soundscape you hear is deterministically driven by real-world data points. As the universe moves, the music changes.

• 1. The Ascendant & Sun (The Harmonic Foundation) The rotation of the Earth and the position of the Sun form the core musical structure. The rising zodiac sign on the eastern horizon (the Ascendant) sets the fundamental root key, shifting roughly every two hours. Meanwhile, the Sun's whole-sign astrological house relative to that Ascendant dictates which of the 12 modal scales is active, slowly transitioning from bright day-sky scales (like Lydian and Ionian) to introspective night scales (like Locrian and Altered).
• 2. The Decans (The Drone Breath) The drone is powered by the division of each zodiac sign into three 10-degree decans. As the Ascendant travels through its current decan, its position drives a slow, triangular-wave breathing cycle (completing a full inhale and exhale every ~40 minutes). Dual detuned carriers swell and recede, grounding the soundscape in a physical respiratory rhythm.
• 3. Ocean Tides (The Visual Wave) Global marine telemetry determines the visual representation of our tidal waves. While the audio engine relies on the decan breathing cycle for its ambient drone, the tidal changes remain a silent, visual-only representation of the ocean's pull.
• 4. Wind (The Noise Bed) To ground the cosmic elements in terrestrial reality, real-time atmospheric wind speed shapes an organic, sweeping brown noise bed. This filter-swept noise breathes a rustling, natural, and tactile texture across the background.
• 5. Earthquakes (The Tectonic Chords) The planet's movement voices rich, resonant synthesizer chords. When a seismic event occurs anywhere in the world, it triggers a chord mapped to the nearest tectonic plate. The magnitude of the quake dictates the velocity and strike velocity, while its depth determines the octaves and dark timbre of the chord.
• 6. The Moon & Aspects (The Sky Arpeggios) Delicate, crystalline arpeggios are generated by the relationships between the Moon and the planets. The specific musical extensions (such as sus4, add9, or open fifths) are driven by the active angular aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) of the Moon. The arpeggio's melodic direction is determined by the element of the Moon's zodiac sign, and its tempo is governed by terrestrial wind speed.
• 7. Near-Earth Asteroids (The Crystalline Lead) Slicing through the ambient backdrop are visitors from deep space. Guided by NASA's database of Near-Earth Objects, asteroids making their closest approach to Earth trigger rare, brilliant, crystalline FM synthesizer leads that bloom in pitch and intensity as they peak in proximity.
